Enabling AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Function for AMD Athon64-Based Motherboards
What is AMD Cool'n'Quiet? Cool 'n' Quiet is a newly released power management technology that enables automatic clock throttling for the AthlonTM64 processor to reduce temperature and voltage demands while the processor is idle. This generally results in lower power and noise output since the processor is able to change its frequency according to the amount of power each operation needs.
How is Cool'n'Quiet Enabled? Under normal circumstances, the function can be enabled as long as it is supported by the mainboard and BIOS. Thus before beginning any steps, please ensure that your motherboard model has been updated with the latest BIOS version. If not, users can go to Gigabyte's website at www.gigabyte.com.tw to download the latest BIOS for the specified motherboard. Once this has been done, the steps in enabling this advanced feature are as follows:
Step 1: Update CPU driver Please download the latest driver for update from AMD's website or click onto the following:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html
Step 2: Adjust Power Option Following driver update, please restart your computer. Enter the Control Panel and click onto Power Options Properties. Choose Minimal Power Management under Power Schemes. Following adjustment of the power scheme, the Cool'n'Quiet feature should be enabled.
Step 3: Download CPU Tool Kit The user can check to see if the Cool'n'Quiet function is enabled by using AMD's CPU tool kit. The tool can be downloaded from AMD's website or click onto the following: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html
Step 4: Check CPU Clock Speed Open up the tool kit icon and check your computer's CPU clock speed. Activating the Cool'n'Quiet function will result in greatly lowered CPU clock speed. The clock speed will decrease all the way down to 800MHz at idle. As processor loads increase, Cool'n'Quiet will incrementally increase the Athlon 64's clock speed back up to 2GHz. Another benefit of the Cool'n'Quiet function is that it also lowers the processor's core voltage as its clock speed drops.
